CRITICAL CARE

We’re committed to providing each patient with exceptional care. Our Critical Care Units serve our most vulnerable and acute patients. Nurses care for complex patients including those experiencing multisystem failure, renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and sepsis.

Nurse Managers in critical care are strong advocates for professional growth and development in their staff. They are committed to a professional environment that supports shared governance, teamwork, and patient focus. We are proud to provide critical care nurse-to-patient ratios that meet and exceed the standards.

MEDICAL SURGICAL

Our medical-surgical units serve patients in neurology, infectious disease, renal, family medicine, geriatrics, and cardiology, as well as support the CCU team with general medical patients.

Medical-surgical units continue to improve patient education and decrease readmissions using the teach-back method, which gives our nurses the opportunity to assess a patient’s understanding of new concepts while preparing them for self-care after discharge. Our medical-surgical nurses bring a wealth of experience and diverse backgrounds to the units, and benefit from strong support from their managers and unit educators. While we welcome experienced acute care nurses to the units, we also welcome candidates from other nursing environments, such as acute and sub-acute rehab.

Intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and an interest in continued learning and professional development are as integral to the success of nurses at BMC as their clinical training.

EMERGENCY ROOM

BMC is the 10th busiest emergency department in the country and treats the highest volume of trauma victims in New England.

The Emergency Department (ED) at Boston Medical Center evaluates nearly 132,000 patients annually. This translates to over 350 patients per day with approximately 200 registered nurses ready to provide care. We recently welcomed many of our Medical Surgical nurses to the Emergency Department for a 6-month residency to support their professional growth and development within the organization. Nurses who are successful in this busy, fast-paced environment enjoy the challenge of managing the diverse clinical scenarios they encounter during their shifts, and work successfully as part of a team.

PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES

With 42 bays in our PACU and 16 ORs, we perform the most complex procedures for our patients. Nurses in these areas have competencies in pediatric ALS, EP, IR, TAVR, and more. In our hybrid OR, we combine perioperative technology with cutting edge imaging capability.

Our new ORs are outfitted with booms to accommodate laparoscopic equipment. Our commitment to innovative technology and stellar nursing leadership creates an environment for interdisciplinary collaboration and continuous learning—resulting in exceptional patient care and outcomes.

BMC nurses are involved in Unit Based Councils, The Integrative Nursing Council, the Nursing Informatics Council, and the Nurse Practice Council. Nurses at BMC always have the opportunity to have their voices heard!

CARE MANAGEMENT

Our Care Management team develops programs to coordinate the care of patients and assists them and their families as they navigate the health care system.

The team advocates for the needs of patients and families in the community, helping them cope with the emotional impact of illness, negotiating with insurance and managed care companies, conducting discharge planning, and providing other assistance. Successful RN Care Managers are compassionate individuals who enjoy multi-tasking, and have strong organizational skills.

MATERNAL HEALTH

Our 48,000 square-foot Women and Infants Center is designed around the industry-leading “couplet care” practice.

Offering services such as the centering pregnancy program, these innovative and integrated spaces allow mother and baby to bond throughout labor, delivery, and postnatal care. For this high volume unit, we strive to find nurses who possess experience with high-risk medication and blood transfusions.

Our NICU is comprised of 22 beds, 10 of which are private, for high-risk patients requiring individualized care and attention. The delivery model in all of our units is Patient Centered Care—the practice of caring for patients and families in a way that is meaningful and valuable to the individual patient. As advocates, our nurses provide compassionate care with dignity, respect, and sensitivity to the patients’ cultural values and autonomy.

In 2018, nurses on our Mother/Baby discharge unit designed an initiative to improve discharge times. The unit identified barriers and streamlined workflows to make the discharge process more efficient. Changes included improving efficiency in acquiring car seats, simplifying the birth certificate process, and bringing discharge medication to the bedside. It’s just one example of our nurses working collaboratively to improve the patient experience.
